Haute Off the Press: See Tiger Roar
Is it just me or does Tiger Woods appear a little rough around the edges on the cover of the February issue of Vanity Fair — shot by none other than famed photog Annie Leibovitz? The headlines read, “TIGER Raw, Never Before Seen Photos!” and “The Mystery of a Sports Superstar We Thought We Knew.”

I mean really, we have become accustomed to the mild-mannered tennis prodigy fashioned in old school preppy gear like mesh polos and creased khakis. And this happens — is this the stance of a Tiger ready to strike?
Who isn’t aware of Tiger’s recent relationship(s) faux pas, which had the media and golf loyalists in an uproar and catapulted his career and marriage into a media frenzy? But, is this the way his PR people plan to “clean up” his soiled image, by making him look like a convict in the prison yard pumping iron? What is he trying to say, better yet, what the heck was he thinking?
Though, I’ve never been a fan of Tiger or followed his career, a part of me still grieves for that clean cut image the name Tiger Woods once evoked. Je suis très désolé — sigh.

Haute Off the Press: A Toast To Eden
A collaboration between super model Naomi Campbell and mega photog David LaChapelle results in nothing short of artistic genius. Campbell graces the cover of the ”The Eden Issue: Nothing Lasts Forever” of Flaunt magazine in a shoot entitled, ” The Rape of Africa.”
LaChapelle is the quintessential provocateur and his latest work serves as evidence. An obvious nod to Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli’s “Venus and Mars,” the sure to be controversial image depicts Campbell with American model Caleb Lane. Campbell and Lane are sprawled out surrounded by the spoils of decadence, flanked by children holding weapons, and a city being reconstructed serves as backdrop.
Cheers to a photographer and a magazine willing to push creativity to the edge!

Designer Dossier: Iconic Designer Revolutionized Fashion
Coco Chanel Reigns as the Most Influential Designer of the 20th Century

There are so many facets to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who rose from humble beginnings as an orphan in France, eventually transforming herself from a cabaret dancer (where she earned the nickname Coco) to a couturier. The iconic fashion designer — who once owned a millinery shop, became linked to a Nazi officer, and lost favor with her beloved Parisians — closed her couture house for more than a decade. But, the resiliency of the chameleon-like designer led her to reinvent herself and become a highly revered fashion designer. Read the rest of this entry »
Haute Off the Press: Phi Succumbs To the Recession

Kasia Struss in Phi Spring 2010
The recession has taken another bite out of fashion. The most recent victim being Phi, founded in 2003 by Susan Dell.
Phi chief executive officer Julia Hansen told Women’s Wear Daily, “It’s a really challenging climate right now for luxury goods,” she said “There is not so much confidence in that market going forward.”
For spring 2010, Norwegian fashion designer and creative director Andreas Melbostad put a sophisticated twist on biker chic with a black and white palette that included slim leg suede pants that buckle and lace up the leg, strappy and banded brassiers and bustiers, as well as metal-encrusted jeans, studded blazers and a leather zipper jacket.
The Phi boutique in SOHO is slated to close at the end of next month, but fans of the brand will have one last chance to snap up a piece from the edgy label. Their pre-spring delivery arrived in stores this month.
Currently, the atmosphere for high-end brands is cloudy. Hopefully other designer labels will be able to ride out this stormy economic period — time will tell.
