Character Dossier: Classic Blair Waldorf
What self-proclaimed fashionista doesn’t envy the classically chic wardrobe of Upper East Side teen queen, Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl? She has a look even a sartorial sleuth could love.
Just check out her sleek look here in a Ralph Lauren tailored blazer, a striped peter pan collar button down shirt, silk tie, and two-tone chifon ruffle skirt — j’adore!
The blazer is a wardrobe staple this season, and if it is a classic tailored cut like the one Miss Waldorf is sporting, it’s timeless. This boyfriend-styled jacket has a place in any look, worn dressed up with a chiffon skirt or sporty with riding boots and jeans.
Here are a few styles to try, looks to buy, and tips for wearing:
Stay true to the classics in the Ralph Lauren Rugby “Little Boy Polo Jacket,” $298 at rugby.com. Wear with roll cuff skinny jeans or a cable knit turtleneck dress for a preppy collegiate look.

Add a little Bohemian flair in the vividly colored velvet École jacket, $168 at jcrew.com. Dress up pinstripe trousers or jazz up a mini with tights for an ecclectic look.

Flatter your curvy figure with a one-button closure metallic saddle stitch denim jacket, $79.50 at lanebryant.com. Pair with bootcut jeans and a jersey graphic print top for a contemporary look.

Character Dossier: Gossip Girl Chic
The cast of Gossip Girl are truly living a golden life on screen and off (they so deserve an Emmy). Remember the frenzy following other teen phenomenons like Beverly Hills 90210 and Dawson Creek ? Just like them, Gossip Girl has everything you want in a good teen drama — rebellion, envy, friendship, and gossip. But the quick-witted drama about these Upper East Side teens is a bit edgier, making it not only worthy of the teen set, but the 21+ crowd, too.
I haven’t walked the halls of a high school in, oh, a couple of years … wink, wink … but I see the obsession behind the Gossip Girl series. Besides the to die for hair, the sophisticated wit, and the sensational story lines — like Blair’s love triangle with Nate and Chuck and almost pregnancy scare, Serena’s ‘deadly’ secret, and Jenny’s vintage Valentino caper — a fashionista’s gotta love the dare-me-to wardrobes.
These prep schoolers are supremely stylish and you can’t be faint of heart (or light in cash) if you want to mimic their Manhattan moxie. Their wardrobe selection reads like a Who’s Who in fashion — Coach, Jimmy Choo, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Nanette Lepore, James Perse, and Seven For All Mankind.
Here are a few character looks:
Serena (Blake Lively) turns up the glam on her Constance Billard school uniform with high fashion designer confections like Coach handbags and leather boots (or fringed Minnetonka Moccasin boots) layered over knee socks and tights. She makes school-wear debonair enough for everyday.
Who else but Blair (Leighton Meester) could doll up in a red, white, and blue ensemble with no fireworks in sight, and still look trés chic? Although Blair’s persona is about as cozy as an ice cap, she’s the queen bee amongst her prep school entourage, and for good reason, her style is impeccable. She loves her accessories, especially decorative headbands embellished with bows and flowers, patterned tights, and designer handbags by GoldenBleu and Be&D.
And what about Chuck (Ed Westwick)? He’s the poster boy for GQ. He sports Brooks Brother ties one day and pairs a button-down shirt and ascot (or bow tie) with a Ralph Lauren blazer the next. I swear his look is southern gent meets ivy league prepster, but it works and fits his savoir faire attitude.
So, just what about their style is so enviable and how can the everyday fashion diva (or divo) achieve their fierce fashion forte without a legion of stylists at beck and call?
It’s simple:
- Don’t try to fit into a mold, wear looks that compliment your style.
- Shy away from cookie-cutter fashions from discount chain stores (especially the one Paris Hilton thought sold wallpaper).
- Mix high-end designer labels with budget finds for an ecclectic look.
- Dare to be different and look for gear NOT sported by everyone in your inner circle.
- Scavenge vintage boutiques and antique stores to find one-of-a-kind designer pieces, also see if your stylish grandmother wouldn’t mind you rading her closet for rare finds (I do it all the time).
- Follow trends loosely, incorporate your style into the latest looks, making it your own.
- Avoid knock-offs and look-alikes, true fashionistas will know you are a fashion fraud, so avoid the embarrassment and opt for less expensive QUALITY pieces that look intentional.

Mission: More Gossip!
It was back to school for Gossip Girl last night and we can’t help but be entrenched in the drama surrounding Serena van der Woodsen and Chuck Bass becoming feuding sibs, Blair Waldorf regaining favor with her minions and Jenny Humphrey going to great lengths, including stealing, to become an “it” girl.
But let’s admit it, amidst the fiery shenanigans of the Upper East Side teen queens, what really fascinates us are their chic looks.

It is so easy to forget that these stylish ladies don uniforms to school when they coordinate them with some of the poshest designer pieces such as a brown leather motorcycle jacket worn by Serena like the Lucky Brand Jeans leather scalloped jacket, $348 (above) or an equestrian inspired tote carried by Blair like the Ralph Lauren large sporting tote, $1.495 (below).

But the ladies don’t only rock the hot looks on campus, they are equally as chic out on the town. Just a few designer names tossed around during the episode included Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel and Nanette Lepore.
For a glamorous girl-about-town look worthy of a gossip girl, I think the Nanette Lepore “Party Girl” dress, $430 (below), would make you the envy of any party.

Stay tuned for more chic on-screen looks …

Mission: Paris Hilton’s Bling
While investigating a new show on E! called Pop Fiction — an Ashton Kutcher production — I watched hotel heiress Paris Hilton dashing around Los Angeles in a champagne-colored Range Rover with the “Shaman” she has been pictured inexplicably palling around with lately.

Well, it was all an elaborate hoax pulled off to dupe the paparazzi, and boy did it work — they chased, they snapped, they shouted, all to the amusement of Paris and the fake Shaman.
But what we care about is her chic look (I must admit, the girl is definitely classing up her act). She sported a classic trench coat atop a vintage-inspired lace peasant dress.
While she chatted with the reality show’s crew by cell (using her silver Blackberry Curve), I spotted a to-die-for ring on her right hand that appeared to be a cluster of diamonds trimmed by black enamel.
Watch footage of the Pop Fiction caper here.
It took a little sartorial sleuthing to uncover the whereabouts of the gem-encrusted, bow-shaped ring, but here’s what I uncovered …

The ring is part of the Kenneth Jay Lane Pavé collection. I found a similar design, the Kenneth Jay Lane Pavé flower ring, $120, at vivre.com. The collection can also be found at boutiques and stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.
Until my next haute mission …
