Fashion Week: 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 2009
3.1 Phillip Lim puts a modern twist on the equestrian look and Bohemian chic with slim-fit bootcut trousers and riding coats with detachable hems. Lim goes all out with shapely designs this season from angular crop jackets and structured military-inspired jackets to gauzy dresses and leather skirts. Here’s a few looks to love.

This coat craves a pair of True Religion jeans, n’es pas?

This peasant blouses makes a sweet impression with the round leather mini skirt.

A structured military coat and flirty sheer dress is so haute!

Ruffles and leather, it’s poet chic.

Fashion Week: Vivienne Tam Shows High-Tech Fashion

Vivienne Tam served up the quintessential avant garde fashion show during New York Fashion Week Spring 2009. Her models didn’t wear turn-of-the-century bustle skirts or neon wigs and striped leggings, instead, they sashayed down the catwalk in dresses, tops, and jackets fashioned from Chinese-inspired floral prints with peony motifs in violet and deep persimmon. So what’s so avant garde about that? The frilly floral designs were accented by mini digital notebooks cleverly disguised as clutches.

Tam and Hewlett Packard teamed up to create the HP Vivienne Tam Special Edition Notebook (below), which measures about 10 inches and is expected to come out next year. [LAPTOP MAG] What do you think of a designer laptop?

London Fashion Week: Costelloe, Anastase, Clark
London Fashion Week Spring 2009 kicked off Sunday on the heels of New York Fashion Week with smart shapes, sassy styles, hot hues, and pretty prints. Here are a few looks to love:
Paul Costelloe marked his 15th year at London Fashion Week this year [LFW]. Costelloe, who is designing the uniforms for the British women’s cricket team, created a feminine collection with flirty silhouettes that included a cap sleeve dress with a banded hem and bubble silhouette; a checker-patterned, shawl-collared dress with a bubble hem; and a feather trimmed A-line dress with a bell-shaped skirt. Costelloe focused on curvy shapes fashioned from luxurious shimmery, sheer, and printed fabrics.
Charles Anastase, a young designer who studied Political Science at the Lycee Charlemagne in Paris, was an illustrator before launching a fashion design career. You could say his artistry came natural considering his father was an architect. Celebs such as Keira Knightley and Chloe Sevigny have an affinity for the avant garde designer’s creations, and it’s not hard to see why. [LFW]
He featured looks in sheer black like we saw on the Monique Lhuillier runway. Here they had full wide hem skirts that resembled chiffon aprons. What I loved about this look was his two versions — the first look being a schoolgirl with a crested blazer, collared crisp white shirt, and silky ascot, the other more on the side of schoolgirl gone bad, with a black leather jacket, biker shorts, and opaque tights. Gossip Girls Serena and Blair would adore these looks.
Then Anastase took on another look altogether, the Cockney-inspired look that we saw on the Marc Jacobs’ runway. The leather crop jacket and trench coat give this look a modern twist.
Ossie Clark creative director Avsh Alom Gur describes his designs as “effortless, fun, and feminine” [LFW], and I agree. Clark introduced frivolity to his collection of silky frocks with hues that resembled the palette of salt-water taffy and print patterns that likened a paint by numbers grid. He kept the silhouettes slim, straight and tubular with details like cowl necks, bloused bodices, and ties at the waist.

Fashion Week: Spring Trends
New York Fashion Week Spring 2009 has come and gone and we had a sneak peak at what we might see in our favorites stores and boutiques this season. Colors like violet, electric blue, yellow and red; patterns such as polka dot, stripe, and floral; and styles like safari, bohemian, and grunge ruled the runway. But the looks that caught my eye are sure to inspire a few cool trends this spring:
Head-to-toe white looks were all aglow on several runways from hats, shoes, and shades to suits, dresses, and jackets. The designers who favored ultra bright white included Betsey Johnson, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors (right), Ralph Lauren (left), and Luca Luca.
There were vibrant prints galore especially frilly florals that ran the gamut from country to tropical. The designer runways that were blooming included Diane Von Furstenberg, Betsey Johnson, Nanette Lepore (right), Monique Lhuillier, Badgley Mischka (left), and Vivienne Tam.
The little black dress, a usual fashion staple, was sheer, lacy, and strappy — the textures reminded me of vintage lace curtains. Designers that featured the LBD included Caroline Herrera, Ralph Lauren, Monique Lhuillier (right), Badgley Mischka, Zac Posen, Tracy Reese (left), and Cynthia Rowley.
Brilliant brights are always a spring favorite and some of the colors to look for this season are orange, blue, violet, yellow, and hot pink. These vibrant hues lit up the runways of Carolina Herrera (left), Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore, Monique Lhuilier, J. Mendel (right), and Tracy Reese.
Black and white shared the runway in fresh and flirty prints from horizontal stripes to geometrical shapes. Designers that jazzed up their collections with prints included Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors (right), Cynthia Rowley, and Vera Wang (left).
