Veterans in the personal audio industry are continuously vying to introduce the latest and greatest in mobile technology. But a new kid on the block, Audio Chi, has introduced a new line of headphones they anticipate will give the industry leaders a run for their money with what Audio Chi describes as “flawless sound, creative design and comfort.”

Audio Chi’s W-Series collection of headphones are not only aesthetically pleasing — with quilted headbands, chrome detailing, brilliant patterns and vibrant colors including gold, silver, purple, and fuchsia — but functional, too, with a detachable, interchangeable woven cable. The design of these headphones has addressed two major concerns with other headphones like tangled cables and bad connections. Woven fabric encases the cord while the detachable connection prevents an intermittent and faulty connection.

W-Series headphones sit a certain distance from the ear at an angle so that it facilitates a natural listening experience. The W-Series utilizes what Audio Chi terms as Structural Acoustics Technology, with the sound coming from varying angles creating a three–dimensional sound effect, where sound is delivered with the vividness of a live performance. Audio Chi uses Mylar drivers that are micro-coated in Titanium. The coating on the drivers allows for ultra-fast response times without distortion; this enables the music to be enjoyed at a lower volume than with other headphones.

“Sound this good, has never been available in headphones this small. We have worked tirelessly to reproduce professional studio sound quality without compromising on comfort and design,” says head of research and development Lewis Heath in a statement. “I think the first collection represents the Audio Chi personality perfectly; modern, stylish and independent.”

Audio Chi W-Series headphones can be purchased online at www.audiochi.com and are compatible with most potable audio devices including the Apple iPhone.

Spring 2010 Fashion Week in New York, Milan, and Paris, were rampant with over the top shoes that were sky-high and ridiculously opulent with dramatic details and silhouettes. Designers went to great lengths to over exaggerate and super indulge us with the most unlikely, and possibly unwalkable, shoes ever. The silhouettes were bulky and fanciful with unique heel designs, odd geometric patterns, and kitschy embellishments. The designers who took the lead with a nod to the avant garde include Pierre Hardy, Dolce & Gabbana, and Camilla Skovgaard. But, the true trendsetters were Alexander McQueen and Bruno Frisoni who showcased collections with impeccable craftsmanship and creativity.

Wedges and stilettos with unique heels and soles made a big splash on the runway.

British designer Alexander McQueen’s “Titanic” ballerina pump was a fitting match to his Atlantis-themed collection with it’s antiqued brass heel that latched to the rear of the beige pump.

Balenciaga’s urban-inspired collection featured an ethnic looking multicolored leather lace-up bootie that had a reversed heel with the widest part being at the base and the narrow point beneath the heel of the foot.

Another edgy heel the orange “Saw” sandal with a zigzag sole came from Danish designer Camilla Skovgaard, who has garnered a celebrity following including Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry.

Geometric and cutout patterns were just as prominent on the runway.

Pierre Hardy’s designs were the most fashion-forward. The gold multicolor transparent sandals with geometric patterns filled with a transparent fabric were artsy and reminiscent of a Piet Mondrian-style painting.

Especially stylistic were the Pierre Hardy stretch boots with kneepads that had three sections to the boot, from kneepad to shin strap and down to the shoe boot. The sections were connected by a single strap of leather that ran vertically down the front of the boot.

In a more granny boot style was a perforated leather ankle boot with a lace-like cutout pattern from Marni. The exposed heel made this look a hybrid between a boot and a closed-toe sandal.

Elaborate embellishments made some shoes pop like Italian designer Roberto Cavalli’s metallic sandal with detachable chain ankle strap. The gold-tone shoe had a ribbed leather texture that sleekly complemented the metallic chains.

In contrast, French label Roger Vivier, whose namesake created the stiletto heel, had a smooth gray suede sandal with fringes that dangled over the top of the shoe and tassel ties that laced up the back.

Pierre Hardy’s more colorful “Mega-paillettes” wedge sandal was a blue oasis with transparent discs in varying sizes and shades of blue.

Louis Vuitton’s contribution had an ethnic vibe like a leather pair of crisscross clogs with tassels on each side — one fringed and the other with a hair-like fabric — and a pyramid-shaped heel.

Some looks were even animalistic in comparison like Parisian designer and creative director for Roger Vivier, Bruno Frisoni’s “Blow Up” heel with fringe detail that made it resemble a Puli, an Hungarian sheep-herding dog with dreadlock-like hair that falls to the ground.

When it comes to accessorizing an outfit, shoes are a simple way to jazz up any ensemble. But the shoes that graced the spring catwalk were anything but simple. Fashion designers opted for lavish designs and lofty details that took ordinary heels to extreme heights with unique designs, interesting shapes, and decorative embellishments.

Perfectly coifed updo, check. Tightly coiled ringlets, check. Chicly sculpted bob, check. Yep, a good hair day is every girls dream.

Just the other day in an elevator a blond straight haired, blue-eyed 20-something lamented to her friends how her golden locks were “so unmanageable” and how she refused to get a perm, but couldn’t hold a curl to save her life. In response, they gasped and shuddered as if in agreement that they understood her plight.

Not all of us can be a hair heiress, so unless you are hair royalty and inherited a voluminous, frizz-free ‘do, you have some of the concerns that many women do today. Whatever your hair fairytale, there’s no denying that certain hair worries are more than just having a bad hair day. They can be cultural, too. That said, could one’s race be at the root of it all when it comes to good or bad hair?

Good Hair” Trailer Featuring Chris Rock

Who isn’t familiar with the stereotypes surrounding good and bad hair like the fine and limp shag of a European, the kinky curly afro of an African American, or the bone straight bob with blunt cut bangs of an Asian. There is such a social stigma about having “good hair” that it has even made its way into popular culture like the docu-comedy by Chris Rock, titled, of course, Good Hair, which examines black women’s hair in America and the subsequent use of relaxers and wearing weaves. In the documentary, rock explains that he was compelled to make the film after his daughter innocently asked, “Daddy how come I don’t have good hair?” When most dads are fielding questions about boys, Rock, an African American actor and comedian was posed this hair-raising quandary from his little girl.

Tori Nichel, Fashion Designer

Tori-Nichel, a New York-based fashion designer who has been featured in Elle, Essence, WWD, and touted by Forbes as an emerging designer to watch, likens her hair to a spiral cord on a phone saying, “You can pull it out several inches longer than it looks, but eventually it will always spring back to a coil.” Other than going gray, she has no concerns about her hair and even though she has not been directly affected, she believes there is a stigma with African American women who choose to wear their hair natural. Regardless of the stigma, Tori-Nichel confidently sports her locks a la natural in an afro.

Nearly a decade ago she opted for a look that set her apart from her contemporaries when she lopped off her shoulder length relaxed hair. “I felt like I looked like every other Black girl and wanted a look I could call my own,” she says. The up and coming designer admits she likes her hair as is and has never worn a weave. “I can’t say I haven’t been curious at times but I was afraid it would break my hair off and weaken it. It seemed safer to work with what I had,” Tori-Nichel says. She believes the most positive aspect of African American hair is its versatility.

With salons doling out the dos and don’ts of over processed, treated, and styled hair, it’s a wonder that so many women still throw caution to the wind when straightening, dyeing, hot curling, even lightening their hair in an effort to achieve that elusive perfect ‘do. It isn’t even too far reaching to say that maybe they’re trying to emulate Hollywood hair chameleons such as Rihanna, Lindsay Lohan, Beyoncé, Scarlett Johansson, and Paris Hilton, who coincidently has her own line of hair extensions — that have no qualms coloring, cutting, curling, even adding weaves to their heavenly manes.

Fulya Guney, Web Design New Media

Academy of Art University graduate student and Turkey native Fulya Guney, who wore a Katie Holmes styled bob with bangs for four years, says it was Sienna Miller’s layered locks that served as inspiration for her shaggy ‘do, stating that she likes the textured look of the starlets hair. Guney describes her own hair as thin and wishes she had more of it but confesses she likes her flat hair because some days she is just too lazy to care. For Guney, the cut must be stylistic. “I just want to wash and blow dry my hair and go out; it’s all in the haircut for me.” Thin flat hair isn’t typical Guney says of Turkish girls. “Girls in Turkey have beautiful curly hair; they are obsessed with getting it flat and I always hear them say they wish their hair was like mine.”

Wendy Chu, Fashion Merchandising

But, is it always greener or even cuter on the flip side? For just as many looks one can get there are just as many products like gels, hairsprays, creams, straighteners, and curling irons that can help them achieve it. California-born Wendy Chu who is in the MFA Fashion Merchandising program at the Academy knows this all too well. “I like how my hair can easily be manipulated with hair products and stay that way the entire day,” she says. Asian women are known for their bone-straight raven locks.

Chu, who is of Chinese ancestry, says that most Asian women complain about their hair falling flat and lacking volume. “I’ve tried to obtain the messy look, but it just doesn’t work and when I ask for side swept bangs, they never turn out the way I had envisioned.” Typical of Asian women, Chu has always had fine, straight hair. She even recalls her mom giving her homemade perms when she was in elementary school to add volume. She tried the process again stating, “I did get a slight wavy perm, which turned out great until my straight, no volume hair grew back.”

We are always in search of the perfect hair hoping this day will be the one where there is no frizzies, the curl holds, the fly-aways are tamed, and just maybe the updo will manage to hold throughout the night. But, is any one group truly cursed with a perpetually bad ‘do? One thing for sure good hair and bad hair means different things to different people regardless of their ethnicity. Luckily there are a bevy of tools on the market from rotating flat irons and crimpers to weaves and perm kits that the look desired can be achieved. Nichel sums it up nicely saying, “I define my hair, my hair doesn’t define me.” Touché.

The score and soundtrack to the eagerly anticipated New Moon — which is a sequel to the teen vampire romance Twilight — is dark, brooding, and haunting like one would expect from this genre of film.

In Twilight, we were enchanted by the epic romance between Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Bella’s opening narration, “I’ve never given much thought to how I would die, but dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go,” is the mantra not only for Twilight but New Moon as well. The score matches the fervor of the romantic yet forbidden story line, with a fiery of squelching electric guitars, riveting chamber music, and pulsating percussion beats.

Composer Carter Burwell, who has worked on films such as “No Country For Old Men” and “Where the Wild Things Are,” provided a bittersweet atmosphere for the first film. Amidst haunting tunes and marauding notes, chimes a piano motif that plays the heartstrings. The soft, tranquil piano serenade that Edward played for Bella, which signifies their love, is echoed throughout the film as Edward’s enchantment and devotion towards Bella grows and vice versa. “Bella’s Lullaby” is the heart of the film with a role all its own, keeping the viewer engaged and sympathetic towards the forlorn lovers.

For the sequel, the film’s director, Chris Weitz sought the talent of French composer Alexandre Desplat, whom he worked with on his film “The Golden Compass.” This change in composers means that we may have to bid adieu to “Bella’s Lullaby.” But, Desplat has written his own prelude to this romantic saga called “New Moon (The Meadow).” His piano ballad resembles the chase of Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” in its rapid succession of notes that die down to a soft flutter. It is a classical nod to a forgone period and the possible departing of star-crossed lovers, which are alluded to with Bella’s flashbacks and visions of Edward in the trailer.

If the trailer is any indication of the drama to unfold, then the soundtrack is a fitting accompaniment. Ok Go’s “Shooting the Moon” with its tribal beats and growling sound effects is an obvious homage to the role of the wolf in the sequel. In rhythm with the moody theme of the sequel, the soundtrack has a bit more edge than the first film’s soundtrack, with tracks like Thom Yorke’s “Hearing Damage,” Hurricane Bell’s “Monsters,” and Bon Iver & St. Vincent’s song “Rosyln” with its unworldly voices and acoustic guitars. Just as Twilight revamped the lore of vampires, the New Moon soundtrack ushers in an eerie apocalyptic vibe with its indie tunes.

A ballgown fashioned from deconstructed thrift and vintage t-shirts in vibrant colors like crimson red, electric blue, canary yellow with logos and text emblazoned on them is what you can expect from eco-friendly fashion designer Angela Johnson. When most designers look for luxurious textiles to create their collections, Johnson scours second-hand stores and vintage boutiques to find her fabrics, which come entirely from t-shirts.

Like many designers, Johnson found inspiration from the works of well-known designers including Hussein Chalayan, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Betsey Johnson. But, Johnson gained appreciation for fashion as a young child when she would rifle through her grandmother’s closet filled with vintage fashions. Although she says her grandmother’s style was not always interesting in a good way, she liked its originality. “She had a sweater that had roads knitted into it with actual toy cars sewn onto the roads, but, she also had amazing sequined gowns and classic pieces too,” she explains.

The Arizona native attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles where she received a degree in fashion design. When Johnson first attended FIDM, she could not sketch or sew. After attending the school for a year, she says that she learned enough to begin working in the industry and launch her own line.

Johnson has worked since 1995 fine-tuning her skills as a fashion designer. Before launching her eponymous line, Johnson created a line called Monkeywench that she co-owned with actress Christie Clark, who played Carrie Brady on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” She describes the line as street-wear inspired by the surf, skate and snow boarding industries. The line was developed in the ‘90s when Johnson says this type of clothing for women was not readily available, giving Monkeywench a niche in the industry. “It was an amazing experience that enabled me to learn even more about the industry which led to the ability to operate my own line today,” she says of starting her first label.

The line sold internationally for five years and was sported by celebs such as Pam Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio. Monkeywench was featured in magazines such as Seventeen, Girl’s Life, and Sportswear International, as well as on television including “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Days of our Lives.”

Today, Johnson focuses her attention on her company Angela Johnson Designs. The Scottsdale-based designer creates her collection in a cotton-candy pink studio in the back of her home, which is a converted pool house. Upon entering the small design studio, you are easily bowled over by the retro décor featuring a vintage pink sofa. Hanging on rolling racks are rows of custom patterns that Johnson uses to create her signature t-shirt designs.

Johnson developed a penchant for quirky designs with a philosophy inspired by popular culture, music, and t-shirts. Although she scavenges for vintage t-shirts to create her collections, her designs maintain a modern silhouette and style. Her current designs are a far cry from the first garment she created for herself, which was a quilted silver lame, low rise, full-length skirt. “It looked like I was dressing for a night on the town at the moon,” she says of the way the skirt looked. “But, I loved it and it really expressed my style at that time.”

Looking back, she describes the design as ridiculous and poorly made, “It didn’t even have side seams, but it was my first attempt and I was proud of it.” She has since honed her designing skills and considerable time and effort is taken to construct one of her garments, especially the ballgown, which she says takes the most time. It takes 20 t-shirts to make the ballgown and the corseted bodice has 10 sections, which extends to a full, floor-length skirt that is a collaged patchwork of t-shirts.

Each year Johnson’s collection includes four staple garments — a ballgown, party dress, mini dress, and corset. The only design element that changes is the t-shirts that she uses. For custom orders, the customer can supply the t-shirts or request a particular theme. In addition to the staple pieces she also offers new designs each year to coincide with current trends. This year she created high-waist pencil skirts with peplums and blousy caftans. When Johnson creates a new design, she makes a few samples and shows them at Scottsdale Fashion Week and then creates them to order.

Although Johnson has a burgeoning career as a designer, she admits to challenges along the way. Her biggest challenge currently is running a design business in a city without a fashion industry. “There are no wholesale fabric vendors, manufacturers, contractors, or sales reps so it is nearly impossible to mass produce from here,” she says. “That is what led to my decision to make one-of-a-kind clothing out of thrifted t-shirts.”

Johnson’s contributions to the fashion industry have not gone without recognition. She was awarded with Fashion Group International of Arizona 2004 Rising Star Award, Scottsdale Cultural Council Artist of the Year Award, and Scottsdale Fashion Week Designer of the Year Finalist. She was also recognized in 944 magazine as “Chicest Local Designer” and AZ Foothills magazine as “1 of 20 Influential Women.”

After more than a decade in the fashion industry, what matters most to Johnson as a fashion designer is integrity. “I won’t make something that I don’t like even if I think it will sell because it’s what’s currently in style,” she says.

Mary J. Blige teamed up with Gucci to celebrate the opening of The Mary J. Blige Center for Women in Yonkers, New York, the singer’s hometown. The non-profit organization, whose mission is to educate, empower, and encourage women, is a partnership between The Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN) and Westchester Jewish Community Services. Blige and Steve Stoute, a record executive, cofounded FFAWN in 2007 after a conversation the two had at the 2007 Grammys regarding the singer’s desire to help women in need. The award-winning songstress is no stranger to tough times and often in her prolific lyrics she sings about overcoming troubles in her life. “As a child, I never saw a confident woman — I only saw women being abused,” Blige told Women’s Wear Daily. “There was so much pain growing up — it would have been in vain if I didn’t put myself out there. That’s why I am here; that’s why FFAWN exists”

Gucci, a luxury fashion and leather goods brand, has partnered with the charitable organization to raise money. Frida Giannini, Gucci creative director and board member of the PPR Foundation for Women’s Dignity and Rights, designed a limited edition watch that retails for $1,895, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting FFAWN. Blige and Stoute eventually plan to expand the outreach of FFAWN and provide scholarships programs to fund tuition for educational degrees and vocational training.

Alexander McQueen Takes An Aquatic Plunge With His Latest Collection

Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 Collection, Plato’s Atlantis, was a Poseidon adventure at its grandest scale during Paris Fashion Week. Reptile printed garments with space age silhouettes and kaleidoscope patterned textiles in vibrant hues set the tone for this deep sea-inspired collection. The show was an amazingly executed spectacle that was tautly constructed with each and every detail. It was set on an abbreviated catwalk with the models circling parallel tracks with cameras mounted on robotic arms. In the background a screen projected the shadowed profiles of the models.

There was an animalistic air to the collection and the look of the models was stark and stoic. The makeup was pale, the lips nude with facial prosthetics that gave the look of an amphibious creature. Further dramatizing the look was the hair with skewed wavy strands and twisted braids that climaxed into curved fin-like updos.

It is apparent that McQueen had some far away aquatic galaxy in mind when designing this collection. The silhouettes mimicked waves with curves and folds that gracefully traced the body. One just has to look at the statuesque model Karlie Kloss in a plunging V-neck ballerina-esque dress, to see this. It was fashioned with layers of fluttering tulle and beaded cap sleeves in a blue swirl ranging from a pale aqua to a deep Mediterranean. Prominent was the tulip shaped shift that resembled a similar frock from Balenciaga’s Spring 2008 collection.

The garments were ultragorgeous, hyperdramatic, and appeared surprisingly wearable. The shapes were sculpted with stand out shoulders, bulbous hips, and cinched waists. The color palette was rich in varying hues of blue, yellow, green, brown, as well as glittery metallics. Then there were the platform shoes — that resembled a hunched over armadillo — that plagued their every move. The models seemed to study each step as they staggered down the illuminated catwalk — so not to misstep or, of course, fall.

For those not privileged enough to sit front row center at the show, there was a live-streamed video on showstudio.com, which unceremoniously crashed after Lady Gaga Twittered that her new single would be premiered during the fashion event. This show was definitely a homage to the avant garde trend that McQueen is known for; from his fall 2008 princess-themed designs to his fall 2009 mad-plaider looks. But, for Plato’s Atlantis, McQueen eagerly jumped ship and what resulted was an artistic treasure. He took fantasy to the ultimate level that makes you wonder what you’ll see next from the perennial designer.

After a decade of showing in Milan, the Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2010 show in London began with statuesque models cascading down the catwalk in what appeared to be a brand metamorphosis. Christopher Bailey, the young British designer put glamour into the austere line known for its English countryside appeal and classic cut military-inspired trench coats. Since Bailey took the helm of Burberry as creative director in 2001 he has done for Burberry what Tom Ford did for Gucci. He ushered the label into a new era and transformed the brand for a new generation.

There was plenty to catch the eye in the Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2010 Collection. Everything that hit the catwalk was in some fashion ruched, draped, twisted, or knotted. Even the sky-high wedges were strappy and banded or twisty and knotted. Burberry shed its countryside roots to embrace a look worthy of the young jet setting crowd and it was evident by the who’s who of young Hollywood that ruled the front row including Mary-Kate Olsen, Liv Tyler, Freida Pinto, and Emma Watson — the face of Burberry — who wore a glittery gold ultra-mini shift dress from the spring summer 2010 collection.

The most notable change in the look of Burberry was in Bailey’s reinterpretation of the trench. There were myriad looks from a horizontal ribbed mini version and a bubble style with ruffles to a futuristic pale lavender trench with asymmetrical ruched shoulders (one higher than the other) and a satin bubble trench with petal-like embellishments.

Almost everything was thigh grazing in neutral, pale, and pastel hues. The edgy looks reinvigorated the label and wove life into the collection. It was sleek and modern with a straight tubular silhouette. There were a bevy of beautiful pieces like a sequined covered coat and short sleeve jacket that looked like crumpled foil had been affixed to them. There was a jacket with fabric laced at the shoulders, which created a basket weave appearance. Some pieces seemed to be purposefully ill fitting with asymmetrical sleeves, where one fell slightly shorter than the other. Other garments gently pulled at closures and looked as if they were created haphazardly. There were tops with bands that twist and knotted across the body and jodhpur-like leggings with horizontal ribbing. And, almost everything was belted.

The accessories were just as stunning with bags mimicking Bailey’s love of texture in suede and crock with the same ruching, twisting, and knotting details. There was very little of the classic Burberry Haymarket check. The iconic print was almost a no show only making an appearance in clutches and handbags, except in the textured pattern of the gray scrunched socks. Jewelry was minimal except for angular, chunky Lucite bracelets.

The makeup was a cool complement to the collection, giving a pale, wide-eyed, fresh appeal, while the hair was kept simple, either bone straight with a center part or in a bob with blunt cut bangs.

There’s no mistaking who Bailey’s target audience was for this uber modern, ultra sophisticated show, and he is not shy about his intentions. One just has to take notice of the social networking sites that were all a buzz on show day like Facebook, where Burberry gave updates counting down to when the collection hit the runway and a live stream video of the show. There were also Tweet alerts on Twitter with messages like how to reserve a made-to-order trench coat previewed during the show.

At the close of the show, metallic confetti rained down to a final procession of the models. It was almost like a celebration of a new year, but instead it was a celebration of a new generation and a revived presence for Burberry. It was a befitting show to end London Fashion Week on its 25th Anniversary and a long awaited homecoming for Burberry Prorsum.
